ADAM BLACK

ADAM BLACK
(1784 - 1874)

Edinburgh born Scottish Publisher and founder of A & C Black, one of the city's principle booksellings. In 1827 he owned the copyright to the Encyclopedia and in 1851 Walter Scott's Waverley novels.

He was twice Lord Provest of Edinburgh from 1856 to 1851 and retired in 1865.

He died in 1874 and his sons inherited his business which moved to London in 1895.
